Support Group Policy

We are organizing support groups open to all Women. The purpose of these 1 hour meetings is individual personal growth. It is an environment of support and encouragement and a journey of self discovery in a very gentle way.

…A message from Suzanne Ford, Author. The Woman's Class.

Confidentiality and the Prototype Support Meetings

"The exercises we have done these last  meetings were from Balance and the Feminine Nature an e-book on Amazon, copyright 1989, written by me, Suzanne Collins Ford. I wrote and facilitated a seminar for Women in the 1980’s and this book is an outline of the exercises and discussion points in the seminar. A Self Improvement Program.

Although these exercises seem common, it is important they are done in the right context. These are some Guidelines everyone needs to agree on in order to make it work."

Guidelines for Women’s Support Meeting Prototype

1. There are no wrong answers. We had a taste of the discussion brought on by the questions we pondered. Regardless of the answers given by the participants, the value comes in the discussion. Listening to each other, sharing viewpoints, acknowledging each other is how we build support and encourage personal growth.

2. Confidentiality is vital to a healthy discussion. Honesty is crucial, but it must be accompanied by Trust. Everyone needs to know that nothing said will go outside of the room. Nothing, regardless of how harmless it seems. Sharing our own experience with our loved ones is fine, but no one else’s story, no matter how interesting. Everyone must agree to strict confidentiality.

3. We speak only from our own viewpoint. We give advice and feedback only to ourselves, no criticism allowed. We listen fully and non-judgmentally to others. We strive to use I-messages to deliver gentle but effective communication. We strive to Stay positive and Solution Oriented. We own our viewpoints but respect others.

4.  Feedback is also valuable in a controlled situation, but not unless called for specifically and carefully facilitated using I messages. Unfortunately, feedback can be unintentionally brutal, and relationships can be damaged by a few words. Even with I messages, a good rule is to use two sincere compliments with every constructive statement.
